I biked over this morning to grab new handlebar grips for my bike. It was pretty hot outside so I was sweating a bit from biking over.
When I asked about getting new handlebar grips the lady working the register went straight to the clearance section. That seemed odd since I wasn't particularly looking for a discount but I'm not against saving a couple bucks. When she didn't see any grips in the clearance section, she showed me two other models that were being sold at a regular price.
The more expensive version had a screw lock while the cheaper was a generic slide-on. Since my bike was in the parking lot I figured it would be easier to buy the cheaper ones and slide them onto the bike when I got outside.
After picking the cheaper version, she commiserated about how she knew what it was like living paycheck to paycheck.
I didn't say anything about my income level, I just wanted the cheaper grip because it was easier to use. She may have assumed because I'm Latino and was sweaty that I must have been of low income. I did not appreciate being racially profiled.
I ended up buying the cheaper handlebar grips to try them out but they were too small anyway. She probably could have mentioned the size disparity which was hard to tell without putting them on the bike. I threw them away and bought nicer grips at a different bike shop.
I wish the experience would have gone better.

Very nice shop! My husband went in last week and the owner helped him with a repair and did not charge him. I went in today and she was so patient as my toddler did his best to touch and destroy everything! She even filled my tires for me before we left!
